Tapes

In summer 2019, I started making a unique and modern set of cassette mixtapes to distribute around DC. After mixing a series of groovy, (outer) spacey playlists I made a series of slip covers to pair with the musical aesthetic. Designing audio and graphics in harmony was a constructive exercise—both were intended to give listeners the sense they had discovered something mysterious, unknown, and discovered. Sonically, the tapes relied on obscure songs from a very wide variety of genres and periods, to give the listener a sense of what might be heard if someone from another world accidentally tuned into some conglomerate Earth frequency. Graphically, the cassettes and their slip art were designed to be similarly mysterious, with a mixture of odd organic shapes and patterns that were simultaneously familiar, odd, and unspecific. I created a screen print design based off of these graphics for apparel and other items, as well as a separate sticker sheet design matching the aesthetic (see bottom of page).
